Introduction
Formal relations between Australia and the Philippines began in 1946. Today our relationship is strong and is continuing to develop in a way that is benefiting both countries. Some of the areas that we are linked with the Philippines include development, defence, trade, economic investment, tourism, education and migration.
One of Australia's significant contributions to the Philippines is development assistance. We are the Philippines second largest provider of development assistance second only to Japan. Over the years Australia has invested millions of dollars towards peace and development efforts. We have supported and funded emergency programs in areas effected by conflict. Australia's contribution is also helping to grow the Philippines economy.

In recent years our economic relationship has been growing. Our trade partnership is rapidly increasing in value and there are increasing opportunities for Australian businesses to be involved in the mining industry in the Philippines. Migration is also creating a huge link between our countries. The Filipino community in Australia is among the fastest growing communities.
Education
Education is one of the areas where Australia's friendship with the Philippines can be clearly seen. Our countries have been partnered in education since the 1950s when Filipino leaders came to Australia to build their knowledge and leadership skills.

Australia has provided scholarship opportunities for Filipinos to study at universities in Australia and defence officers are also supported in training and studying in Australia. The Australian government's investment into education shows its commitment to help develop the Philippines. Education is one of the best ways that our country can provide development assistance to the Philippines. Each year Australia donates over 50 million dollars towards education in the Philippines. This investment is helping the growth of quality basic education which is creating stronger economic development. Through Australia's investment into education the Philippines are being prepared for economic growth and prosperity.
Education is one of the key strengths of Australia. Sydney boasts a population of more international students than any other city in the world. The amount of international Filipino students studying in Australia is increasing which shows our strong connection.

Four Australian warships as well as assault transports, smaller warships and support ships landed at Leyte on October 20, 1944 alongside the U.S. navy and air force. These were apart of General MacArthur's force of 174,000 men used to clear the Philippines from the Japanese. The Australian navy fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Battle of Surigao Strait as well as the Invasion of Lingayen Gulf.
